Biography

James Shapiro holds the Canada Research Chair in Transplantation Surgery and Regenerative Medicine. He directs the islet transplant program in Edmonton. He was the lead investigator on the famous “Edmonton Protocol” cell transplant treatment for diabetes. This year, his team began first in human trials with embryonic stem cell derived insulin producing cells transplanted in an immunoisolation device.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand current studies and programs in clinical islet cell transplantation.
  • Discuss progress in transition from research to more routine clinical care for selected patients with TIDM
  • Discuss future potential approaches, including stem cell transplantation and tolerance, that could facilitate more broad application of cell transplant and regeneration treatments in diabetes.
