Visceral Adipose Tissue and its crosstalk with the liver allograft: implications for transplant outcomes
Researcher from Spain and Switzerland present in this timely and exciting review emerging molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between visceral adipose tissue, the liver allograft, and alloimmunity. Those aspects are of clear clinical relevance when utilizing extended criteria donor grafts and when transplanting livers into recipients with MASLD, HCC, or cirrhosis. Therapeutic strategies aimed at reprogramming adipose tissue toward a less inflammatory, more tolerogenic state are highlighted.
Oxygenated perfusion enhances hepatocyte function in human iPSC-liver tissue
Authors from Japan developed a novel method to generate functional and transplantable liver tissue using human induced pluripotent stem cell derived liver organoids.
By infusing those organoids into decellularized liver scaffolds and applying an oxygenation system based on hemoglobin vesicles, researchers successfully created liver tissue with enhanced engraftment and hepatic function. Their data demonstrate that oxygenated human induced pluripotent stem cell liver tissue produces liver specific proteins and relevant metabolic genes. Moreover, transplantation of these tissues onto the liver surface of immunodeficient mice improved functional integration.
Direct Measurement of Organ Procurement Organization Donor Potential using Comprehensive Referral Analysis: Feasibility and Implications for Assessing OPO Performance
Previous approaches for assessing Organ Procurement Centers have not been reliable. Here, authors suggest using validated referral data to assess donor potential. The authors assessed hospital records of > than 45.000 potential organ donors and evaluated reasons why donations did not proceed. This approach was possible by using robust electronic systems in each OPO. The authors show that this method has the potential to provide more accurate data than previously provided through administrative data sources. National organizations may use this approach to refine quality assessments.
Impact of high-emergency lung transplantation procedure on 1-year survival in France
Using data from all 10 French Lung Transplant Centers, the authors selected > than 900 patients who underwent high emergency lung transplantation. Survival did not differ over 1 year when compared to standard lung transplants. Moreover, a multivariable analysis showed that high-emergency transplantation was neither associated with an increased risk of 1-year mortality nor with an augmented postoperative morbidity. Those data respond to previous concerns that high emergency lung transplantation is associated with worse prognosis.
