Dear IPTA Members

We are excited to announce the launch of the first cycle of the IPTA Mentoring Program, an initiative designed to foster growth, collaboration, and innovation within our community. This program pairs experienced clinician scientists with emerging talents, creating a nurturing environment for knowledge exchange, professional development, and mutual inspiration.

Our mentors are renowned experts, eager to share their insights, while our mentees are driven individuals, ready to embrace new challenges and expand their horizons. Together, they will embark on a journey of growth, pushing the boundaries of clinical science and making meaningful contributions to the field.

Following, you will find the list of our promising mentees and their esteemed mentors, along with short bios that highlight their backgrounds, expertise, as well as their aspirations for the mentoring experience. We believe that this program will not only strengthen the bonds within our association but also pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in the field of pediatric transplantation. Case Study

Respectfully submitted by Jessica L. Brennan, MSN, CPNP on behalf of the IPTA Allied Health and Nursing Professionals Committee

The transplant team from UCSF recently hosted the 27th annual transplant picnic. A team of volunteers from nursing, social work, psychology, medicine and surgery organized a celebration for more than 300 attendees. Patients and families who have undergone life-saving kidney, liver and heart transplants enjoy a day of games, music, food, kayaking and crafts, along with their care teams. A new theme is selected each year. In honor of the Olympics, this year it was Go For the Gold! All members of the transplant team enjoy seeing kids being kids, our own children playing with our patients and talking about non-clinical topics. This event reminds all of us why we do the work we do!

IPTA Satellite Symposium at TTS 2024

Respectfully submitted by Dr. Lars Pape and Dr. Katherine E. Twombley on behalf of IPTA

The pediatric voice in transplantation was heard loud and clear through IPTA at the recent 30th Congress of The Transplantation Society in Istanbul, Turkey, with a 2-part Satellite Symposium on the subject of Challenges and Opportunities in Pediatric Transplantation.

Speakers and moderators were diverse, spanning Europe, North and South America and the Middle East, and covered kidney and liver transplantation, as well as topics relevant to all disciplines. Allied Health and Nursing Professionals were also included in a talk on neuropsychological testing in transplantation.

With around 60 attendees, the session was well attended (despite the early morning start!) and provided excellent educational opportunities for all attendees interested in pediatric transplantation. In particular, the discussions were extremely good. We were happy to hear so many ideas and comments.

    Literature Review

Respectfully submitted by Dr. Alisha Mavis and Dr. Irene Kim on behalf of the IPTA Multi-Organ Committee

The Multi-Organ transplant (MOTx) committee was recently established in 2022 and tasked with the mission of addressing research, challenges, and policy initiatives unique to pediatric patients undergoing multiorgan transplantation.

Since its inception, the MOTx with its nearly 20 committee membership, has been productive in establishing its goals and initiatives and putting these initiatives into action. The MOTx hosted a webinar entitled “Controversies in Management of Methylmalonic Acidemia (MMA) in Children” in January, 2024 with experts from around the world, discussing the surgical, nutritional, and metabolic challenges specific for patients with MMA. This can be viewed here:

In addition, several members of the MOTx co-authored a manuscript entitled, “Incidence and outcomes of simultaneous thoracoabdominal triple organ transplantation in the United States” in Transplantation Proceedings. This can be viewed here:

The committee most recently thanked outgoing committee members who completed a 2-year term and welcomed its new membership. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the MOTx is currently working on submitting 3 session proposals for the upcoming 2025 IPTA Meeting and plans to submit 1-2 abstracts for presentation for the IPTA Congress.
