Overview

There is an urgent need to develop new tools for organ assessment, new methods to enhance organ recovery, and new sources of organs suitable for transplant. These efforts will expand access to life-saving transplants.

Outline

  • Discuss the magnitude of the shortage of donor organs suitable for transplant
  • Outline the pipeline of discovery of new methods for organ assessment
  • Explain novel technologies, including machine perfusion and storage modifications, that enhance recovery of donor organs for transplant
  • Describe the past, present, and future efforts to expand the pool of donor organs so more transplants are available for patients in need
