Presentation 3 - Identification and Referral of Possible Organ Donors

Friday, December 10, 2021, 9:00 AM (Local time in Montreal)
Local time (Corresponding local time at your current location)

Overview

The identification of organ and tissue donors is an essential step in organ transplant activity. The non-identification of donors is one of the main causes of failure in the donation process. To identify donors, it is necessary to know the profile of potential donors but also to set up the necessary means to detect the units and hospital services where potential donors will be managed. Transplant coordination team is at the forefront of all the work involved in donor detection. Unifying terminology facilitates communication among healthcare professionals including definitions based on the critical pathway for organ donation. Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) practices is another approach to consider in patients in whom treatment for curative purposes is futile, and who are considered possible organ donors, with the aim of offering donation outside the ICU.

Learning Objectives

  1. To identify the different types of donors and the role of healthcare professionals involved in this activity.
  2. To increase the detection of a large number of donors.
  3. To unify common terminology & definitions among healthcare professionals.
  4. To increase the detection of possible donors outside the ICU implementing ICOD practices.
