State of the Art in “Islet Isolation - Do's and Don'ts”

198.1 - State of the Art in “Islet Isolation - Do's and Don'ts”

Presenter: Balamurugan, Appakalai, Louisville, KY, USA
Authors: Balamurugan Appakalai

Overview:

Clinical islet transplantations are offering the hope of a greater quality of life to patients suffering from diabetes with the potential of insulin independence. The main factor determining the likelihood of insulin independence after islet transplantation is the islet mass that is transplanted. However, the process of human islet isolation is highly variable and not all isolations results with enough islet numbers for transplantation. In this webinar we will focus on the criteria for selecting appropriate donors for islet isolation and the best practices involved in islet isolation, and discusses the scope for areas of further improvements.
