Key Learning Objectives:
1. Appreciate what GWAS have to offer to the transplantation arena
2. Appreciate the special challenges attached to perfoming a GWAS in this setting
3. Learn about the GWAS being conducted by the Wellcome Trust and the UK & Ireland Renal Transplant Consortium.
I will review the motivation for conducting genome-wide association scans (GWAS) on transplant outcomes, and the special challenges arising from this setting.I will present on overview of a ‘pilot’ GWAS on ~600 donor-recipient pairs of renal transplants, and discuss the implications for a larger Wellcome Trust funded GWAS currently being performed on ~2500 donor-recipient pairs which have been collected from multiple regional centres making up the UK & Ireland Renal Transplant Consortium.
