OVERVIEW AND ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

The concept of “deliberate practice” (1)  has become an accepted method to integrate experience and learning. This methodology fosters incremental learning by incorporating continuous feedback to learners in order to reinforce their abilities and help them achieve the curricular objectives.  This cycle of formative feedback relating to specific outcome-based objectives becomes the focus of a curriculum that is designed to build ability.

Dr. Sharon Krackov is an independent consultant in medical education. She is based in New York City, and collaborates with faculty across the US, Canada and Europe on medical education projects.  Dr.  Krackov earned her Ed.D. in medical education at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York.  She has a faculty appointment at Albany Medical College, Albany, New York and at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, New York.

Dr. Krackov was the founding director of the Office of Medical Education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester New York and of the Office of Curriculum and Educational Development at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.  She led medical education endeavors at New York University School of Medicine and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York City. She was the Director of Medical and Dental Education at the Associated Medical Schools of New York. She served as co Chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Northeast Group on Educational Affairs and as a member of the AAMC Group on Educational Affairs National Steering Committee.  Dr. Krackov was President of the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education.

Dr. Krackov’s efforts focus on: Strategic planning, development, implementation and evaluation of educational initiatives, ranging from a conference or course to an entire curriculum; increasing the effectiveness of medical faculty through individual coaching or group activities; streamlining preparation for accreditation site visits; and strategic planning for existing or new curricular initiatives. She is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed presentations at national and international professional conferences and over 30 peer-reviewed and invited publications and has played a leadership role in attracting external funding for medical education projects. She serves as peer reviewer for scholarly presentations and publications and as a member of the Editorial Board of Medical Teacher.

Dr. Henry Pohl is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences, Chicago Medical School.  He did his internship and residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Internal Medicine.  He completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, MA.  He is Vice Dean for Academic Administration at Albany Medical College.  In his administrative academic role at Albany Medical College, he oversees all of the educational programs representing the continuum of medical education as well as the Basic Science PhD and Masters programs including the Clinical Masters in Nurse Anesthesiology and Physician Assistants. He planned and managed the new comprehensive care curriculum initiated in 1993 at the medical college.  He is the Chair of the Sosa Academy of Medical Sciences and Chairman of the Department of Medical Education. He is the past national chair of the Association of American of Medical Colleges’ Group on Educational Affairs.  He was the principal investigator of a Josiah Macy grant that established standardized patient programs at the medical schools in Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse.  He chaired the Standardized Patient Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners charged with developing a clinical skills examination for licensure from 1989 – 2004. He chaired the Test Material Development Committee, USMLE 2CS 2006-2009.  He is immediate past President and a member of the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Physician Enhancement, a membership organization of programs that assess and remediates practicing physicians. He is Past President of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education and the Director of the Eastern Regional office of the State AHEC system.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education from 2006-2011.
