Session 10

10.1 - Innovations in Professional Health Care Education

Presenter: Price, Kerfoot, Boston, MA, USA
Authors: Price Kerfoot

Dr. B. Price Kerfoot is an Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) at Harvard Medical School and a staff urologist at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. His research over the last six years has focused on utilizing rigorous clinical trial methodologies to assess the efficacy and acceptability of online educational methods. Through this educational research, Dr. Kerfoot has developed a new form of online learning termed ‘Spaced Education’. In over ten large randomized trials, spaced education has been shown to improve knowledge acquisition, boost knowledge retention, improve students’ ability to self-assess their performance, and change clinician behavior. In 2011, the White House awarded Dr. Kerfoot the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the US government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
