The first part of the presentation will analyse the metabolic situation of islets after pancreas retrieval, during the isolation procedure and subsequent culture focussing particularly on the supply with oxygen and the generation of ATP. In this context, different techniques for the monitoring of critical physiological parameters during the isolation procedure and pretransplant culture will be presented.
The second part of the talk will focus on different strategies that aim on the reduction of anoxia/hypoxia-induced stress in isolated islets. This discussion will cover the administration of anti-inflammatory or anti-oxidative compounds as well as the addition of oxygen-saving fuels. Furthermore, the implementation of various potential sources for oxygen applied during pancreas digestion and culture of isolated islets will be presented.
