Immunosuppressive Requirements for Prolonged Graft Survival in VCA in Non-Human Primates

Rolf N. Barth, University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD, USA.

We have established a non-human primate (NHP) model of facial vascularized composite allografts (VCA) to study the unique immunobiology of grafts containing multiple tissues types. Standard and experimental immunosuppressive therapies were investigated to determine the immunosuppressive requirements of VCA. Data regarding the use of concomitant vascularized bone marrow as a component of an immunosuppressive strategy that prolonged rejection-free graft survival will be presented. The complications and patterns of rejection uniquely associated with VCA will be presented with reference to the predictive value of the non-human primate as a preclinical model.
