Objective: Transplantation of pancreasgrafts is an established treatment for diabetes mellitus. Polymorphisms ingenes, coding for proteins involved in immune response, may influenceimmunological and non- immunological mechanisms that lead to allograft loss.Vitamin D receptor (VDR) agonist has been shown to reduce short and long termallograft rejection in animal model. There are functional polymorphisms in VDRgene.
Material and Methods: A totalof 20 pancreatic recipients with at least 2 years follow-up were selected and genotyped for polymorphismin the VDR genes (FokI) and the association of each genotype with acuterejection was evaluated.
Results and conclusion: Among them 14 recipients with FF and 6 patientswith Ff genotype were identified. Six patients had documented rejection episode. We are unable to find statistically significant association between study polymorphism and clinical outcomes.
