Transplantation - April 2022 Issue

JUST RELEASED - TRANSPLANTATION - APRIL ISSUE

This issue continues the pathway of discovery around COVID-19, with more information on vaccine responses and a useful summation of strategies used for avoiding transmission of COVID-19 from donors to recipients. A warning not to assess COVID-19 patients for lung transplant too early. It is not all about COVID of course - in the issue you will also find data on organ viability testing after liver perfusion; miRNAs in liver transplants; primary heart dysfunction; the problems of multiple kidney transplants; and a CTS study on CNIs in older recipients, amongst many interesting and novel papers.

Finding the ‘Tipping Point’ to Permanent Kidney Damage

NIH Blog - Lawrence Tabak, D.D.S., Ph.D.

Defining this tipping point has been a major challenge for a variety of technical reasons. But in a study just published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, researchers have discovered a molecular switch involved in controlling the transition from normal tissue repair to incomplete, or permanent, damage [2]. The NIH-supported researchers also suggest a possible drug candidate to control this switch and slow the progression of CKD.

AI System Helps Spot Signs of Heart Transplant Rejection

Medscape - March 29 - Megan Brooks
The results of a pilot study were published in the March issue of Nature Medicine. In the study the group used an artificial intelligence (AI) tool which can help identify heart transplant rejection and estimate its severity. "Our retrospective pilot study demonstrated that combining artificial intelligence and human intelligence can improve expert agreement and reduce the time needed to evaluate biopsies," senior author Faisal Mahmood, PhD, Department of Pathology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, said in a news release.

In Memoriam - Dr. Bernard Langer

OBITUARY - GLOBE AND MAIL - March 29
Dr. Bernard Langer, an icon of Canadian surgery, died of a major stroke on Feb. 23 at the age of 89. Early in his career, Dr. Starzl recognized the importance of deceased donation. He pioneered many facets of transplantation, including immunosuppressive drug development, organ preservation, tissue matching, surgical transplant technology, and developed the team approach to organ transplantation; thus paving the way for the success and acceptance of heart, lung, pancreas, intestinal, liver, and kidney transplantation. The international impact of the fruits of seven decades of commitment to transplantation is shown by estimates of over 600 000 Americans and millions of patients around the world that have received a life-saving organ transplantation. He was also credited as having trained over 1,000 medical and surgical transplant specialists over his 50 years in clinical medicine, many of whom have gone on to successfully develop their own transplant
