Hans W. Sollinger

During his career, Dr. Sollinger revolutionized the field of transplantation. He developed a novel kidney pancreas transplant technique that significantly improved patient outcomes. He pioneered preclinical and clinical research development of an immunosuppressant drug, which improved thousands of lives worldwide. He worked endlessly on gene therapy techniques that could potentially one day lead to a cure for type 1 diabetes. Later in his career, he developed a deep interest in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for Loin Pain Hematuria Syndrome. He served as the chair of organ transplantation at UW School of Medicine and faithfully served on TTS Council for many years. Throughout his career, he mentored countless students, residents, and fellows - many of whom eventually became lifelong colleagues and friends. He thrived on caring for patients and watching them lead healthy and longer lives.
In the coming weeks, we will publish a full obituary and we anticipate numerous testimonials from colleagues, patients, and loved ones, who have been touched by his brilliance, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) donor-positive/recipient-negative (D+R–) serostatus is independently associated with worse allograft and patient survival across solid organ transplant (SOT) types. We characterized trends in CMV D+R– serostatus among adult SOT recipients performed in the United States.
Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare cause of end-stage kidney disease and associated with poor outcomes after kidney transplantation from early disease recurrence. Prophylactic eculizumab treatment at the time of transplantation is used in selected patients with aHUS. We report a retrospective case note review describing transplant outcomes in patients with aHUS transplanted between 1978 and 2017, including those patients treated with eculizumab.

Utilization of organs from coronavirus disease 2019–positive (COVID+) donors for solid organ transplantation remains variable across various centers in the United States.1 Despite the good quality of available organs from COVID+ donors and no known transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 to the recipient,1 factors associated with utilization of these organs remain poorly defined. The aim of our study was to investigate the correlation between a transplant center’s use of organs from COVID+ donors, its transplant volume, and its use of hepatitis C virus–positive (HCV+) organs.
Organ and tissue donation and transplantation (OTDT) legislation and policies vary around the world, and this variability contributes to discrepancies in system performance. This article describes the purpose and methodology of an international forum that was organized to create consensus recommendations related to key legal and policy attributes of an ideal OTDT system. The intent is to create guidance for legislators, regulators, and other system stakeholders who aim to create or reform OTDT legislation and policy.
