TTS @ Santander Transplant Summit, November 9-10, 2023

The Transplantation Society has been pleased to sponsor and participate in the Santander Transplant Summit, November 9-10, 2023. Organized by the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT), under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Summit’s theme was “Towards Global Convergence in Transplantation: Sufficiency, Transparency and Oversight”.

TTS and many of its leaders have contributed significantly to a critical review of major issues in donation and transplantation of organs, tissues, and cells. The Summit was attended by 183 participants from 57 countries.

The interactive discussions focused on the contribution of transplantation to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and why transplantation should be a global health-care priority, as well as current challenges with organ donation and transplantation and with substances of human origin. The historical and current work of TTS, such as the development of the Declaration of Istanbul and the work in progress of the Global Data Harmonization Committee was noted on day 1 of the meeting with Elmi making summary remarks at the meeting's closure.

Stay tuned for a public statement of recommendations being prepared as an outcome of the meeting.

Man receives 1st full eye transplant — 'one step closer' to restoring sight in future patients

Surgeons have performed the world's first transplant of an entire human eye, an extraordinary addition to a face transplant — although it's far too soon to know if the man will ever see through his new left eye.

How breast implants helped save a man with severe lung damage

When 34-year-old Davey Bauer’s lungs stopped working, doctors turned to an unusual tool to help keep him alive: large breast implants. Experts say it was an innovative solution to give Bauer’s body time to fight off a nasty infection so it could accept a lifesaving double lung transplant. It may be the first instance of a potential transplant practice that could save people with infectious disease who probably would not have survived just years ago.

What’s New: Updates on Cytomegalovirus in Solid Organ Transplantation
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the most common infections occurring after solid organ transplantation. This high burden of disease, which incurs sizeable morbidity, may be worsening with the proportion of high-risk D+/R− solid organ transplantation recipients increasing in some regions globally. Cohort studies continue to support either universal prophylaxis or preemptive therapy as effective prevention strategies.
Cancer Mortality Among Solid Organ Transplant Recipients in the United States During 1987–2018
Solid organ transplant recipients (ie, “recipients”) have elevated cancer risk and reduced survival after a cancer diagnosis. Evaluation of cancer mortality among recipients can facilitate improved outcomes from cancers arising before and after transplantation.

Klotho and Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Are Independent of Vitamin D, and Unlike Vitamin D, Are Not Associated With Graft- and Patient Survival After Kidney Transplantation
Short-term survival after kidney transplantation is excellent but long-term survival remains suboptimal. The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between soluble α-Klotho (sKlotho) and intact fibroblast growth factor 23 (iFGF23) measured 8 wk and 1 y posttransplant with long-term graft- and patient survival in a cohort of kidney transplant recipients with deficient and nondeficient vitamin D (25[OH]D) levels.
Tough Nut to Crack: Transplant-acquired Food Allergy in an Adult Liver Recipient
Transplant-acquired food allergy (TAFA) is the phenomenon in which a de novo food allergy presents after transplantation. Although more widely reported in pediatric literature, liver TAFA remains rare in adults, with only 7 prior reported cases. The underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms, risk factors, and long-term outcomes of liver TAFA in adults are not well understood. We present a case of TAFA in a patient with no prior allergic history who received a graft from a young donor who died from a reported asthma attack.
