Just Released - Transplantation Journal - November Issue

As the colder weather draws in the northern hemisphere, the issues seem naturally to have turned to ischemia across animal models, types of transplants, clinical outcomes, and therapeutic options. The reviews provide excellent sources of information about managing more elderly recipients, the issues we must grapple with to resolve determinants of death in DCD, and the complexity of CD8 T cells. There is much to consider across the range of transplant practices, from donation to long-term outcomes.

Just Released: Newsletter Transplant

Comprehensive worldwide data on donation and transplantation from 89 countries

The Newsletter Transplant is one of the most valuable activities of the European Committee on Organ Transplantation of the Council of Europe (CD-P-TO), produced in conjunction with the Spanish Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT). Since 1996, this publication has allowed the CD-P-TO to share information on donation and transplantation activities, not only in member states of the Council of Europe, but also in a progressively increasing number of countries throughout the world. The Newsletter Transplant is also a tool that allows the CD-P-TO to inform on its activities.

Transplantation Journal Special Highlighted Series: The Santander Collection

We present a series of articles from the Global Santander Expert Consensus Meeting on Donation and Transplantation!
The goals of the Global Summit were to critically review the situation of organ donation and transplantation, as well as that of other SoHO (substances of human origin), delve into the aforementioned key issues, and devise the future of transplantation in the global arena. All the organizations involved in the Global Summit have been actively working in the transplantation field over the last decades and were determined to join efforts for a coordinated response to the challenges that transplantation is facing.

Prevention of Trafficking in Organs, Tissues, and Cells
Trafficking in human organs, cells, and tissues has long been a source of concern for health authorities and professionals, and several international ethical guidance documents and national laws have affirmed the prohibition of trade in these substances of human origin (SoHOs). However, despite considerable attention to the issue of organ trafficking, this remains a substantial and widespread problem internationally. In contrast, trafficking in cells, tissues, and medical products derived from SoHOs has received comparatively little attention, and the extent and nature of such trafficking remain largely unknown.

Spatial Transcriptomic Signatures of Early Acute T Cell–mediated Rejection in Kidney Transplants
Kidney transplantation significantly improves the quality of life for those with end-stage renal failure, yet allograft rejection resulting from immune cell interactions remains a persistent challenge. Although T cell–directed immunosuppressive drugs effectively contain graft rejection in most patients, a notable proportion still experiences acute T cell–mediated rejection (TCMR). Despite an emphasis on suppressing T cell–mediated immune responses, successful control over TCMR is not always achieved, suggesting the potential involvement of factors beyond T cells.
Absence of IL-6 Receptor Blockade Effect on the Outcomes of Transplant Glomerulopathy in the Absence of Anti-HLA Donor-specific Antibodies
Transplant glomerulopathy (TG) is the hallmark of chronic antibody-mediated rejection but often occurs without anti-HLA donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) in the assumption that other DSAs may be the effectors of the tissue injury. Recently, we reported a positive effect of interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor blocker tocilizumab (TCZ) in TG/DSA+. In the present study, we investigate the effect of TCZ in a cohort of TG cases without detectable anti-HLA DSAs.

ISN-TTS Fellows Award

We are proud to announce the first recipient of the ISN-TTS Fellows Award!

The TTS's collaboration with ISN has led to a new fellowship opportunity for fellows to become leaders in transplantation in their home institutions and improve transplantation standards locally.

If you want to advance professionally through the Fellowship Program, the next deadline is May 1, 2025. Learn more here or contact fellowship@theisn.org for further information on the requirements for this award.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The ISN and TTS join forces to support the training of young physicians from low resource areas receiving hands-on training in advanced host institutions to acquire state of-the-art knowledge in transplantation. The ultimate goal of such training is to improve the transplantation standards in their home countries upon their return and become leaders in their fields.

The training focuses on providing the skills and knowledge specifically required by the home institution. ISN-TTS Fellowship trainings can be long (6-12 months) or short term (3-6 months).

ISN-TTS Fellowships Deadlines: May 1st and October 1st of Each Year.

2024 ISN-TTS Fellowship Recipient

Nube Siguenza, Ecuador

Will train at Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia Regional Hospital, Chile

I am Nube Siguenza Zeas, an Ecuadorian nephrologist. My professional goal is to specialize in the field of renal transplantation, encompassing both living and deceased donors. My dream is to make a significant contribution to the care of the population affected by end-stage renal disease. I am convinced that the ISN fellowship program will provide me with the invaluable opportunity to acquire the skills, experiences, and knowledge necessary to carry out this work effectively. With this training, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those suffering from renal illness.
