‘Breakthrough’ stem-cell patches strengthened a woman’s failing heart

Jan. 29 - Grafting patches of lab-grown muscle to the surface of the heart could offer a lifeline for people waiting for a transplant. Researchers have shown that patches of muscle grown from stem cells can help to repair a failing heart, in a clinical trial that tested the procedure on a 46-year-old woman.

Could Engineered Immune Cells Be Used to Treat People with Autoimmune Diseases and Organ Transplants while Reducing Infection Risks?

Jan. 10 - NIH Blog - In a study, researchers engineered human T cells to suppress the immune system’s response in targeted areas of the body, an approach that has potential for treating people with autoimmune diseases and organ transplants.

Machine Learning Algorithms in Controlled Donation After Circulatory Death Under Normothermic Regional Perfusion: A Graft Survival Prediction Model
Several scores have been developed to stratify the risk of graft loss in controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD). However, their performance is unsatisfactory in the Spanish population, where most cDCD livers are recovered using normothermic regional perfusion (NRP). Consequently, we explored the role of different machine learning-based classifiers as predictive models for graft survival. A risk stratification score integrated with the model of end-stage liver disease score in a donor-recipient (D-R) matching system was developed.
Tolerance in Heart Transplantation: The Cost of Achieving the Holy Grail of Transplant
Tolerance is the Holy Grail of transplant for several reasons. First, harmful lifelong immunosuppression and related complications can be avoided. Second, the ultimate goal of “one transplant for life” can be achieved by improving the health of transplant recipients and the longevity of transplanted organs. However, tolerance is not yet a regular daily practice, and the induction of a successful tolerance may bring up important challenges and complications.

Donor-derived Cell-free DNA Evaluation in Pediatric Heart Transplant Recipients: A Single-center 12-mo Experience
Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is considered the gold-standard method to diagnose rejection after heart transplantation. However, the many disadvantages and potential complications of this test restrict its routine application, particularly in pediatric patients. Donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA), released by the transplanted heart as result of cellular injury, is emerging as a biomarker of tissue damage involved in ischemia/reperfusion injury and posttransplant rejection. In the present study, we systematically evaluated dd-cfDNA levels in pediatric heart transplant patients coming for follow-up visits to our clinic for 12 mo, with the aim of determining whether dd-cfDNA monitoring could be efficiently applied and integrated into the posttransplant management of rejection in pediatric recipients.
