Blood Gene Expression Profiling and Donor-derived Cell-free DNA to Noninvasively Diagnose Clinical and Subclinical Kidney Transplant Rejection: A Real-life Appraisal Study
Peripheral blood biomarkers aim to noninvasively diagnose kidney allograft rejection, but most lack robust independent validation. TruGraf is intended to exclude subclinical cellular rejection (TCMR), whereas donor-derived cell-free DNA Viracor-TRAC has proven value in excluding antibody-mediated rejection (AMR). We aim to validate both biomarkers for accurate rejection diagnosis in a real-world clinical setting.
Long-term Metabolic Outcomes Post–Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney Transplantation in Recipients With Type 1 Diabetes
Simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplantation is an effective treatment option for type 1 diabetes mellitus and concurrent end-stage kidney disease. However, the diabetogenic effects of immunosuppression can counteract the beneficial effects of sustained normoglycemia. Long-term metabolic trends that reflect cardiovascular risk are reported poorly in the literature.

Psychosocial Determinants and Outcomes of Expedited Liver Transplant Evaluations: Insights From a Retrospective Cohort Analysis
As the burden of chronic liver disease and the demand for liver transplants (LT) grows, understanding the interplay between access to care and patient outcomes is increasingly important. In this study, we explored patient characteristics and transplant outcomes in patients undergoing LT evaluations, with a focus on identifying risk factors for expedited LT evaluation.
Association of a Liver Allocation Policy Change With Domestic Travel for Liver Transplantation
In 2020, liver allocation policy in the United States was changed to allow for broader organ sharing, which was hypothesized to reduce patient incentives to travel for transplant. Our objective was to describe patterns of travel for domestic liver transplant pre- and post–acuity circle (AC) implementation.

Women in Transplantation - New Research Grant for Indigenous Populations

Germaine Wong, Australia
Women in Transplantation Chair

Application Deadline:
May 1, 2025

I am excited to announce the inaugural Women in Transplantation (WIT) seeding grant, designed to address sex and gender inequities among Indigenous Peoples undergoing solid organ transplantation.
Indigenous Peoples, women, and gender-diverse groups face significant systemic barriers to timely transplantation and experience poorer post-transplant outcomes, driven by historical inequities and the impact of social determinants of health. Biological sex and gender roles also shape the progression of chronic disease, access to care, and treatment responses, yet these factors are often overlooked in both research and clinical practice. By prioritising inclusive, culturally safe, and gender-responsive research, this initiative seeks to develop tailored strategies to enhance access to transplantation, improve long-term patient and graft survival, and promote overall well-being. This grant aims to drive sustainable, equitable advancements in transplantation care by fostering meaningful collaboration with key stakeholders.

In Memoriam - Dr. Warren C. Breidenbach III - 1946-2025

It is with a very heavy heart and sorrow that I share the news of the passing of Dr. Warren C. Breidenbach III. For anyone in the field of reconstructive microsurgery or hand surgery, Dr. Breidenbach’s passing is a tremendous loss. For members of this society, those in the field of VCA, and me personally, even more so.

After the first attempt at a hand transplant in Ecuador in 1963 failed within two weeks, many thought that such transplants would not be possible. Dr. Breidenbach, after many years of preparation, performed the first hand transplant in the United States, within days of the first successful hand transplant in the world.
