Richard Slayman Clinical Transplantation Workshop Report

In this podcast, Drs. Macey Levan and Leonardo Riella discuss the Richard Slayman Clinical Workshop on Xenotransplantation, focusing on the historic first human trial of gene-edited pig kidneys at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Riella, Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation, explained how genetic engineering and immunological breakthroughs have overcome barriers to xenotransplantation, including the development of CRISPR-Cas9 tools and new immune suppression drugs. The discussion highlighted the importance of patient selection, ethical considerations, and global collaboration in advancing the field, with Dr. Riella emphasizing that success for patients is measured by scientific learning rather than immediate clinical outcomes. The conversation also addressed public trust and communication challenges, with both speakers agreeing that transparency and sharing of preliminary data are crucial for the field's progress.

Summary Report From the WTC 2025: Focus on the Recent Advancements in Xenotransplantation
Recent clinical cases involving the transplantation of genetically modified pig organs into living patients have highlighted the remarkable progress in the field of xenotransplantation over the past few years. The World Transplant Congress (WTC), held in San Francisco from September 2–6, 2025, stood out as the pinnacle event in organ transplantation (Congress abstracts, see: www.wtc2025.org). It was jointly organized by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Society of Transplantation, and The Transplantation Society.
Myocardial Microcirculation Combined With Lactate Measurements Predicts Ventricular Contractility in a Canine DCD Orthotopic Heart Transplantation During Ex Situ Machine Perfusion
Strictly trusting lactate to classify a donation after circulatory death (DCD) heart as transplantable or not during ex vivo blood perfusion (EVBP) has been criticized. Here, we verified novel prediction parameters based on myocardial microcirculation, which we had developed in previous porcine Langendorff experiments, in canine orthotopic heart transplantation (HTx) with DCD.

Lower Limit of Normal of Pulmonary Function to Define Baseline Lung Allograft Dysfunction
Subnormal lung function after lung transplantation (LTx) has increasingly been recognized as an independent risk factor for mortality. Historically, baseline lung allograft dysfunction (BLAD) has been defined using the fixed “< 80% predicted” threshold from population-wide reference equations, which disregards age- and sex-related variability in spirometric values and can lead to systematic overdiagnosis, particularly in older and female recipients. While the lower limit of normal (LLN), derived from Global Lung Initiative reference equations, has been accepted as technical standard in spirometry, it has not yet been applied to define BLAD.
Comparison of Multiple Frailty Scoring Metrics in Renal Transplant Candidates: A Large Single-center Cohort Study
Pretransplant patients are not required to undergo objective frailty testing, although current listing and allocation policies do record functional metrics. Multiple different metrics exist for assessing frailty.

Research Grants Program - Notices of Intent

TTS provides funding to individual investigators to support their research in transplantation. The spectrum of studies includes basic, clinical/epidemiological and translational. This individual should have spent five years or less performing research in transplantation (and/or immunology relating to transplant) since obtaining their last doctoral degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent). One of these research grants will be preferentially designated to TTS members from a low- or middle-income country. Please send application materials and any questions to jennifer.groverman@tts.org.

Notice of Intent Deadline: March 30, 2026
Full Application Deadline: May 1, 2026

Only applicants who submit a successful Notice of Intent will be eligible to submit a full application.

To further promote equity and global research capacity, the top-ranked applicant from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who is not selected for a main Research Grant will be awarded a TTS LMIC Bridge Grant. This program is designed to strengthen proposals for future funding success for researchers in these regions.

As part of this initiative, recipients will also benefit from personalized mentorship through the TTS Research Mentor Program. Each Bridge Grant awardee will be paired with an experienced Senior TTS mentor from an established research program.

Women in Transplantation Updates

WIT Research Grants will support the next generation of scientists, furthering our understanding of the importance of sex and gender in transplantation. This is a growing field of interest and the more we learn the closer we are to applying these findings to clinical care to benefit patients and donors. Research Fellowship Grants, Research Grants for Low-Middle Income Countries, and Research Grants for Projects in Gender and Sex and SOT amongst Indigenous Populations are being offered.
Completed Proposals are due by 1st April 2026.
Women in Transplantation is delighted to announce that nominations for the Women in Transplantation (WIT) Awards are now open! These awards are presented at the 31st Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS) on Sept 20-23 in Sydney, Australia.
Nomination packages, including all supporting documents, must be received by May 1st 2026.
