WTC State-of-the-art Reports (Part 1)
Key opinion leaders provide summaries of progress presented at the World Transplant Congress 2025, San Francisco. This meeting report series will provide state-of-the-art updates preparing you for the major transplant meetings in 2026 including the ATC in Boston and the International Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS 2026) in Sydney. Part 1 of the WTC reports summarizes updates on Basic Transplantation Science, Kidney Transplantation, Infectious Disease, and Recent Advancements in Xenotransplantation.

Genetic Testing in Prospective Kidney Donors
Genetic testing of potential living kidney donors represents an increasingly relevant clinical practice. Here, authors from Adeleide and Sydney, Australia provide an evidence-based framework of genetic testing in prospective kidney donors. The authors propose a clinical algorithm and present key principles including comprehensive genetic counselling, multidisciplinary team involvement, cascade testing strategies and equitable access.

Ischemia-Free Liver Transplantation: 7-Year Experience
Ischemia-free liver transplantation (IFLT) is a novel approach designed to eliminate ischemia-reperfusion injury. Authors from Guangzhou, China who have pioneered this approach, present their 7-years’ outcome data comparing Ischemia-free to normo-thermically preserved liver transplants. This analysis shows an improved early graft function and patient survival in IFLT recipients.

Survival benefit of accepting livers from DCD 60 years in the United States
The utilization of donation after circulatory death (DCD) livers has significantly increased in the recent past. Despite these advancements, acceptance of DCD livers from older donors varies significantly among transplant centers. Here, authors from Stanford show that accepting DCD livers from donors 60 years provides a clear survival benefit for appropriately selected candidates.

Transplantation Journal Highlights (Continued)

Transplantation Journal - Social Media Content

Interactions Between Donor and Recipient Age in Liver Transplantation: Implications for Donor and Recipient Matching
As donor and recipient populations age, understanding how age mismatches affect liver transplantation (LT) outcomes is increasingly critical. This study examines trends in donor and recipient age and quantifies the impact of age mismatches on posttransplant outcomes.
Pregnancy Outcomes Using Assisted Reproductive Technology in Kidney Transplant Recipients
Infertility is common among those with kidney transplants, and pregnancy is associated with a high risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Little is known about the outcomes of pregnancy with assisted reproductive technology (ART) in women with kidney transplants.

BEAT-BK: An Adaptive, Randomized Controlled Trial to Treat Polyomavirus Infections (BKPyV) in Kidney and Kidney-pancreas Transplantation Recipients (BEAT-BK) Study Protocol
BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a common opportunistic infection in kidney transplant recipients, typically reactivating in the context of immunosuppression. Although asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, reactivation in transplant recipients can cause BKPyV-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN), a leading cause of graft dysfunction and loss. BKPyV viremia affects approximately 10%–15% of transplant recipients, and once BKPyVAN is established, the risk of graft failure can exceed 50%.
Back-to-base Versus In-transit Machine Perfusion in Donation After Circulatory Death Liver Transplantation: Insights From a National Registry
Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) improves utilization of extended criteria liver grafts, but the optimal delivery strategy—whether in-transit or back-to-base—remains uncertain.

Research Grants Program - Notices of Intent

Notice of Intent Deadline: March 30, 2026
Full Application Deadline: May 1, 2026

TTS provides funding to individual investigators to support their research in transplantation. The spectrum of studies includes basic, clinical/epidemiological and translational. This individual should have spent five years or less performing research in transplantation (and/or immunology relating to transplant) since obtaining their last doctoral degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent). One of these research grants will be preferentially designated to TTS members from a low- or middle-income country. Please send application materials and any questions to jennifer.groverman@tts.org.

Only applicants who submit a successful Notice of Intent will be eligible to submit a full application.

To further promote equity and global research capacity, the top-ranked applicant from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who is not selected for a main Research Grant will be awarded a TTS LMIC Bridge Grant. This program is designed to strengthen proposals for future funding success for researchers in these regions.

As part of this initiative, recipients will also benefit from personalized mentorship through the TTS Research Mentor Program. Each Bridge Grant awardee will be paired with an experienced Senior TTS mentor from an established research program.

Women in Transplantation Updates

WIT Research Grants will support the next generation of scientists, furthering our understanding of the importance of sex and gender in transplantation. This is a growing field of interest and the more we learn the closer we are to applying these findings to clinical care to benefit patients and donors. Research Fellowship Grants, Research Grants for Low-Middle Income Countries, and Research Grants for Projects in Gender and Sex and SOT amongst Indigenous Populations are being offered.
Completed Proposals are due by 1st April 2026.
Women in Transplantation is delighted to announce that nominations for the Women in Transplantation (WIT) Awards are now open! These awards are presented at the 31st Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS) on Sept 20-23 in Sydney, Australia.
Nomination packages, including all supporting documents, must be received by May 1st 2026.
